What do you know about the events that occurred in New York, Pennsylvania, and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001? As a person who was just a baby or perhaps not even born yet, do you feel its effects? I know I do. I was a 20-year old college student that day, and I know my life changed forever, even though I wasn't even there. I remember the surreal feeling of watching it happen on television, and thinking it didn't seem real. It felt like suddenly the whole country was in one of those disaster movies, where there are explosions and special effects. I remember thinking about all the people in the planes and in the buildings that day. America changed forever that day. In a way, we became more united at first. Tragedy brings people together, and Americans helped each other out. But inevitably, it became politicized, and it feels like we have, as a nation, become less trusting and more fearful, and often more divided in our politics.
Watch this short video below titled "Boatlift" A lot of people still don't know that 9/11 was actually the largest naval rescue in human history- even larger than the Miracle at Dunkirk during World War II, when thousands of British and French troops were rescued on the shores of northern France from the approaching German army. It is a great story about Americans helping each other out at a time of great fear and uncertainty. Write a journal entry in your notebook about what you know about 9/11, and what you still don't understand, but would like to. Even though you don't remember a pre-9/11 America, in what ways do you think we are a changed nation?
