America in World War II
America's role in World War II was crucial in the defeat of the Axis Powers. Over 400,000 Americans died in the war to defeat fascism and tyranny in Europe and the Pacific. However, it was a war that Americans were hesitant to join. After the trauma and senselessness of World War I and the desperation of the Great Depression, a war was the last thing most Americans could think of. But the events of December 8, 1941 changed that as Japanese bombers attacked the U.S. Pacific fleet in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The next four years were transformative years for America, both at home and on the world stage. The United States emerged from the war as a super power with nuclear weapons, while at home, the war lifted Americans out of the Depression and provided a new life for women, African Americans, Latinos, and all others who call themselves American.
