Unit 1 focuses on the origins of the United States, from its founding principles and culture, its encounters with Native Americans, and ideological struggles over slavery, economics, religion, and freedom. As the United States declared it independence and tackled the learning curve of creating a republic, it was divided against itself over the issue of slavery. At the same time, the country expanded westward, bringing with it its conflicts over morality, religion, slavery, money, land, immigration, and its treatment of Native Americans.
