Unit 4 takes a look at the political expansion of the United States. As Western European nations fought over colonies in Asia and Africa, paying little mind to the rights or comfort of native peoples, the United States struggled to find imperialism in its own national character. Ultimately, the United States became a colonial power as it took on the "White Man's Burden", so to speak, and colonized the Philippines after liberating Cuba in the Spanish American War. Questionable journalistic practices played a role in American support for the war- a stark contrast from the progressive-era investigative journalists. As the United States struggled in its new role as a powerful nation, it embarked on foreign policies in Latin America and Asia which created ripple effects still felt today. Due to these struggles, the U.S. tried to maintain neutrality when the Great War began in Europe. However, the nation soon realized that neutrality would always be difficult, if not impossible, to maintain.
