Unit 2 focuses on the economic growth of the United States after the end of the Civil War, and the political, social, and economic upheaval that came with it. The Gilded Age, as its name suggests, was an era in which America gleamed with wealth on the surface, but in reality the urban cities were full of poverty and despair, as the poorest and most vulnerable were often exploited as pawns in political games. At the same time, America became an industrial powerhouse, rivaling that of the economic and industrial powers of Great Britain and Germany in Western Europe.
