chapter 15: the building of european supremacy- society and politics to world war i
Many social and political changes occurred in Europe from 1860 to 1914. Because of the extension of voting rights to more citizens of nation-states, large political parties, centralized governments, and universal military service took shape. Large labor forces organized into labor unions, while business organized into large-scale corporations. State socialism became a major political force, and the beginnings of welfare emerged. As cities, trade, the population, and industrialism grew, Europe asserted ts dominance in the world once again. In this chapter, we will learn about a new wave of European migration to the Americas, Australia, and South Africa. Meanwhile, Germany caught up to England in industrial capacity, triggering a rivalry between the two powers. This period was also known as the age of the middle class, as the middle class continued to grow exponentially. Cities such as Paris, Manchester, and London were redesigned to fit the new needs of the urban and suburban middle classes, and in particular middle-class women, who were part of a new cultural phenomenon- the "cult of domesticity". While many middle class women benefited from their new role as domestic keepers and consumers, educated women also saw a need for political change, and the women's suffragette movement was born. As cities expanded, the Jewish population was also affected as central and Eastern European states became ever more hostile to Jews, and anti-Semitism increased. Finally, we will look at changes that were taking shape in Russia, whose large peasant class was lured by socialist thought. After Russia's humiliating defeat to Japan in 1905, its backwardness was revealed, and the populace began to see socialism as a way forward for the Russian people.
